Villeroy & Boch Adds Hand-Glazed Antao Earth Washbasins in Three Colours

Dezeen Showroom: Villeroy & Boch is extending its Antao bathroom collection with surface-mounted washbasins designed with Cologne studio KaschKasch. The Antao Earth basins combine a dewdrop-inspired outline with a hand-applied Artisan Glaze, adding variation in colour and texture to a coordinated bathroom range. The design pairs a soft, organic silhouette with a finish that makes each basin’s surface more visually present.

A tactile finish with practical demands

The glaze was developed with Villeroy & Boch’s high-tech glazing laboratory in Mettlach, Germany. The technical brief was to retain the finish’s tactile character while keeping the basins suitable for everyday use. That balance matters: a surface treatment can give a familiar bathroom fixture more depth, but it also has to function as part of an object used routinely around water.

Artisan Glaze is hand-applied, so the finish brings an element of variation rather than the uniform appearance associated with a flat, consistent coating. That variation is central to the product’s appeal, but it makes production more demanding. The collaboration’s stated challenge was to preserve the sense of texture without letting the decorative treatment compromise the basin’s practical role.

Three colourways inspired by nature are available

“The challenge [with the Artisan Glazing] lay in combining an emotionally appealing, highly tactile experience with full everyday functionality,” said KaschKasch co-founder Florian Kallus. Co-founder Sebastian Schneider said the kiln process makes applying the structured finish consistently across a full basin a demanding exercise in precision and ceramic technology. The production method is therefore part of the design story, not a minor finishing detail.

Here’s the thing: the claim of everyday practicality is meaningful, but the source gives no details about maintenance, cleaning or how the finish behaves over time. The design proposition is clear; the long-term performance isn’t described. That distinction matters to anyone comparing a textured surface with a simpler, more uniform basin finish.

Designed to sit within a wider collection

Villeroy & Boch designed the basins to work alongside pieces from the wider Antao collection, supporting a consistent fittings scheme. The three neutral, nature-inspired finishes are Sand, Terra and Smoke. Their restrained palette gives the curving form and glaze texture room to register, while keeping the basins connected to the broader collection.

That collection context is part of the product’s practical proposition. A basin is often selected alongside other bathroom fittings and surfaces, so compatibility in style can matter as much as the object’s standalone appearance. The Antao Earth models are presented as additions to an existing scheme, offering a way to introduce a more tactile focal point without departing from the collection’s visual language.

This is more significant than it looks for a product positioned within a coordinated range: the basin has to carry its own material character and still make sense beside related pieces. If you’re working in this space, that tension between distinction and coherence is familiar. A distinctive glaze can help a standard fixture feel considered, but the collection framing also asks it to remain adaptable to a larger bathroom plan.

What the design signals

The Antao Earth basins put emphasis on surface and shape, with the dewdrop outline softened by a curvilinear profile and the glaze adding colour variation. The result is a deliberately restrained departure from a plain white fixture. And yet, the available information stays focused on the design intent and manufacturing challenge; it doesn’t establish how the basins perform in different bathroom settings or how their finish changes with use.

That’s a useful limit to keep in view. The product’s strongest case is its combination of an expressive ceramic finish with compatibility across a named collection, rather than a claim that it will suit every interior or outperform other basins. A measured reading of the launch leaves room for the design to speak for itself, while recognizing that buyers may still want more detail on care and durability before judging the finish in daily use. A distinctive surface, with practical questions still open.

For the broader category, the collaboration illustrates a familiar design challenge: making a material treatment feel special without losing sight of the object’s everyday function. Here, the laboratory development and kiln process are presented as the means of pursuing that balance. The three finishes offer choice within a limited palette, while the shared shape keeps the range visually connected.
